For the number 2 cigar selected by Cigar Aficionado Magazine in their top 25 cigars for 2024, they have gone to a long-time manufacturer of top cigars, Padron. They selected the Padron Series 1926 No. 48 Maduro. While I have yet to encounter it in my cigar journey, I have had the pleasure of smoking many of it’s “cousins” over the years.
Last year I found the 1964 Anniversary Series at the Tejas Depot just outside of Fredericksburg [see you review on this small but well stocked cigar emporium on the Gallery page of the web site].
This particular stick had been named cigar of the year by CA back in the 90’s and I was glad to get a chance to try it. The cigar was a box pressed torpedo that measured 5 ½ inches with a 52-ring gauge. It was a Nicaraguan puro.
When I nosed it, it reminded me of dew at dawn, a very fresh moist aroma. It also had a deep spice smell to it. It was a medium flavored cigar. It was not in a cellophane wrapper and I think it may have been a bit dried out. I encountered a hard start to the smoke but the draw got easier as it progressed.
While I only rated it a 7 out of 10 at the time, I did make a note to give it another chance, so I will now be on a search for one of the 1964 Anniversary sticks as well as the Series 1926 Maduro.
Maduro’s are usually a bit too strong for me but that is not a hard and fast rule.
If I locate either, I will post it on the web site and if you come across either, let me know where you found them.
