Cigar Aficionado selected the La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Belicoso as it’s number 9 cigar for 2024. I am especially glad to say that La Aroma de Cuba has been on my radar since 2023 when I came upon a Reserva and an Ediction Especial. While I enjoyed both, I found them a bit on the light side for my personal taste.
Then in July of 2024, I picked up and enjoyed the Mi Amor in a Churchill. I found the flavor and the whole experience much more to my liking. The Belicoso is a 5 ½ inch, 54-ring gauge while the Churchill I encountered was a 7 inch by 50-ring gauge. I shall seek out the Belicoso and see how the ratio of wrapper to filler effects the two in a side-by-side comparison.
I found the Mi Amor Churchill to be interesting from the first encounter. Upon nosing it, I got a definite barnyard aroma [which to me is a pleasant thing] with some very deep hint of clove. In one of the writeups I reviewed, they noted “expresso bean” but I can’t say I really got that one.
The cigar had no issues with relights and had an easy draw and an even burn. It had a very pleasant flavor, full yet not overwhelming. It definitely went on the repurchase list with two thumbs up.
The Mi Amor has a Mexican San Andres wrapper which I seem to be finding more and more to my liking. That’s something you might look for on your nest humidor browsing experience. Ask your host to direct you to some alternatives with the San Andres wrapper.
The cigar is produced by the Garcia family in their My Father Cigars factory and is rolled with two binders, a tip of the fedora to an old time-honored technique from Cuba. The filler is also from the Garcia family’s large stock of Nicaraguan grown tobaccos.
The cigar was also selected by CA as it’s number 2 cigar of the year in 2012, so it has got some “legs” on it.
Hope you will pick one up and give it a smoke. I think you will be in for an enjoyable experience.
